Curated List of CivicApps Resources

I was making a list of online resources that relate to CivicApps for Greater Portland (for my own diabolical purposes) and decided to make it a resource that I will continue to curate and develop for the community.  I haven't been able to participate in any of the CivicApps events around OSbridge and I wanted to let everyone know I still care :)

Please CHECK OUT THE LIST HERE

If you think I have missed something or want to tell me how happy or sad you are then please drop me a line here or leave it in comments.  You can also suggest any cool way to aggregate, disaggregate, or filter these feeds and services. Please note that I'm doing this in a completely unofficial manner and cannot answer any questions about datasets or CivicApps policies.

Mashup Shows that Gulf Oil Spill is Bigger than the Portland Metro Area!

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico appears to be much bigger than the greater Portland Metro Area and in fact looks like it could fill the whole Willamette Valley.  Paul Rademacher created this Google Earth Mashup that lets you view the oil spill in the gulf and then superimpose it over places you might know.  This is a smart way to give people a personal context for the spill and improve their understanding.

I Just Liked My Tweet on Facebook and Created a Singularity

The bookmarklet Like-O-Matic lets you share webpages you visit through the Facebook Like widget.  It works on any web page including individual tweets in twitter.  After I liked the tweet above, I was totally sucked into a singularity that materialized out of pure logical energy (or the lack of it).

Downfall Meme: Hitler Responds

Mike Melanson of ReadWriteWeb writes a perfectly appropriate post about the Downfall Meme and YouTubes pulling it from the web. This totally clever video (possibly soon to disappear ) nails the issue completely

EDIT:

Looks like embedding has already been disabled for this video, you will have to go to youtube to watch it.

Here are two screen shots just in case it disappears completely.

Justin Houk

I'm just this guy on the interwebs! Keeping it real. I'm interested in leveraging old and new internet technology to connect and forge high value relationships, change government, and help people find a voice (not voices in their heads). I'm a Geospatial Geek in the Portland area. I speak my own opinions and I'm working on leaving the porch light on for visitors. I'm a firm believer in doing as much good as I can before inevitably turning to the dark side.
