What Buzz Needs to Win Me Over - For Starters

I want to like Google Buzz because it has some very interesting features. Google has created a service that screams potential once the rough edges have been tweaked.  Until they refine it, I'm pretty much staying away from any real investment because my experience has been... well... frustrating (produced a few curses).   Many have noted the issues with privacy that stem from the way Google launched Buzz.  In addition to those issues I have been struggling with some things I would need to see fixed before I can take the service seriously.

  1. Buzz has a messed up way of prioritizing posts that leads to the same few people showing up at the top of the stream.   In fact it's the only social tool that basically shows me the same exact information every time I log in.  I can see what Google is trying to do here by putting the hot conversations and posts at the front of the line. Don't get me wrong, I like the posts of James Scoble, Pete Cashmore, and Marshall Kirkpatrick.   For me it's a failure because I want to see whats happening right now! Not the hottest thing that happened two or three days ago.  I also want to see what my less godlike friends are saying!   Yes, I know there is a mute function, however, it doesn't seem to persist between logins.

  2. The process for figuring out who is following me is total fail in the mobile app.  Buzz notifies me of people that are follow me in a digest style post that is very useful.  I like to be selective in who I follow back and want to base my choices on good information.  If I click on a persons details in the mobile buzz app I'm told that I should add more information about a follower in my address book? This experience is totally fail.  I want to see their Google profile or some sort of abstract.  With twitter I can see a persons bio in almost any mobile app, I don't have to create it for them through research.

  3. The process of figuring out who's following me from buzz within gmail is too much work.  You can call me lazy, however, I have sever allergic reactions to having to click though screens that don't seem necessary.    From the time you get the digest post to the time you arrive at the persons bio in their Google profile you have to click on three different links.   As with the mobile app, can't we see their Google profile bio with one click?

  4. It might be me. but Google Reader integration is pretty confusing when it comes to following or unfollowing additions from Buzz.  This is my most nit-picky complaint. If you don't care about google reader you can just skip this one.  It seemed like buzz just automatically added people to my google reader source list at first.  I cannot remember adding them through some option. This caused the list to go from about 20 people to 176.  I get about an extra 300 items every few hours from this increase.  I'm cool with sorting through it and purging some folks (no offense to them).  My first attempt at doing this resulted in me unfollowing them from Google Buzz all together!  At worst the process is broken and needs fixing, at best it's very confusing and needs some tweaks.

Like I said in the beginning - Buzz has some great potential once Google irons these issues out.  Until then you can find me mostly in Twitter.  Oh, and just to hedge all of my bets, here is my profile if you want to follow me on Google buzz: http://www.google.com/profiles/justin.c.houk

If you think I'm wrong in this post about anything,  you agree, or you just want to say hello please leave me a comment.

Google Buzz Could Push other Services Into Open Standards

This morning I wrote a short post on the way that tools like tweetdeck bring parts of Social web together. I lamented how Googles new update service would add yet another protocol to work with.  Well according to Marshall Kirkpatrick of ReadWriteWeb, Google's new Buzz service could change the entire social updates game because it's relying on open data standards.  This could push Twitter, Facebook and others to open their own services.  Read more on Marshall K.'s post here.

Will Tools Like TweetDeck become the Lingua Franca of the Social Web? #tweetdeck

With google about to spring a new personal update system on the world, I'm wondering when we get to settle down and just worry about communicating.   With proprietary update formats proliferating on the web it's hard to know what you can safely invest in.  Nothing like the standards for e-mail have emerged. Then along comes a small wonder like TweetDeck to tame the wild west of update formats.  It currently supports viewing and sending updates from Twitter, Myspace, LinkedIn and FaceBook.  With it's most recent release It also integrates media and link services like Youtube, Flickr, Bit.ly, Yfrog, twitpic, and many more. Add the powerful column control features and you have something that in many ways is more powerful than the sum of the services it mashes together.

This is significant to me because as tools like TweetDeck, Seesmic Desktop, and others add more services they become less dependent on any one service. Could they possibly transcend their early origins and become the rossetta stones of the social web?  A real and definite standard for updates would change the picture quite a bit but that doesn't appear to be coming any time soon.

Seesmic might see this possibility because it has been developing more user friendly versions of its products starting with SeesMic Look.  This brings up the main weakness/strength for many third party tools - they are aimed at power users.  So what do you think?  Will these tools remain niche players, or is there more potential here? Please let me know your thoughts in my comments.

Eating Cupcakes to Help Raise Relief Funds for the Red Cross

@RedCrossPDX and @CupCakeJones hosted a cupcake brunch and tweetup to help raise money for Haitian earthquake relief. I think we might have been their most enthusiastic cupcake eaters.

The Immersive Experience in Avatar is Triggering Feelings of Isolation and Depression

At first I was poking fun at people that had feelings of depression after seeing this film. 'Avatards' seemed to be the new label for ordinary people that went off the deep end and painted themselves blue. But now I have some remorseful feelings about what seemed like good fun. The film seems to be reminding people how isolated they are and has spurred a wave of issues in those prone to depression.

It would be easy to blame the revolutionary technology used in the film but that would just overshadow the real problem.  People feel disconnected from each other, have little or no connection to the idealized natural environment in the film, and see themselves as disenfranchised when it comes to changing things.    Who wouldn't want to escape through a machine into the world of Avatar if they had problems coping with feelings like these.

I didn't have a reaction like this, however, I can empathize now that I have paused to think about it.  It's a reasonable human reaction if you have feelings of hopelessness and isolation.

What can we do to help people in this situation?

Changing Government: Why ask why? #gov2 #gov20

The secret to creativity is curiosity.

We often forget to teach kids to be curious. A student who has no perceived math ability, or illegible handwriting or the inability to sit still for five minutes gets immediate and escalating attention. The student with no curiosity, on the other hand, is no problem at all. Lumps are easily managed.

Same thing is true for most of the people we hire. We'd like them to follow instructions, not ask questions, not question the status quo.

Yet, without "why?" there can be no, "here's how to make it better."

This post by Seth Godin very much struck a chord for me because of my current circumstances.  I work for relatively progressive government agency that hasn't really caught on to open government or the true power of social networking tools.    To give the agency deserved credit they are slowly investigating those things and have loads of talented people.

I have seen my share of strange looks as I describe government 2.0 ideas.  I don't really blame them because I'm not in a position where people need to listen.   My current job does not entail a government 2.0 projects or disturbing the current order of things.  I'm defeated by silos more often than not and people that are resisting change.

The problem is that I have a warped sense of the way things should work.  People that have some ideas or passion about something should follow their hearts.  I feel like I have something to contribute so I keep trying.  I believe it's important.

I have felt like a fraud lately.  I interact with people that have often been charged with helping to transform government organizations.  When asked who I represent I say I represent myself.  I share stories and write posts that advocate change but I'm mostly stuck in my own bunker.

Am I just feeling sorry for myself?  How do I pitch these ideas without sounding like a loon? Your thoughts would be a great help.

Must See Attack of the Augmented Reality Drones: Parrot AR.Drone in the Air at CES [VIDEO]

First off, The perspective in this video makes it look like this thing is just floating over peoples heads at first. I was like wow, nobody even cares that it's hovering precariously right over them. Secondly, what the hell doe this thing do? I have been racking my brain at what an augmented reality drone would be for. Are we just re-branding some sort of surveillance system, or does this alien looking thing do something new that we should be excited about?

#snOMG in Portland 2009

Portland was hit by an unexpected snow flurry that turned rushhour traffic into a snarling mess.  Mayor Sam Adams was relaying traffic info via twitter. Many other useful tips streamed acrossed social networks and I was able to navigate home through the mess.  Local News Producers retweeted pileups in underpasses.   It all just happened.
